I’ve been following the adventures of the Sketchbook Challenge blog (although, I admit, I have not been producing an abundance of images for every monthly theme). I’m feeling really inspired by some of the work that folks are creating for the February theme of “Close-Up.” I love visual textures of all kinds, and this theme really encourages the artist to zoom in on the surfaces of things.
This week I’m playing with pencil and watercolor on thick paper. I have a tendency to collect natural objects with interesting shapes and surfaces (I’m like a magpie, but without the obsession with shiny), so I chose three interesting items to draw: a piece of bark, a dried leaf, and a partial sand dollar. I discovered that I had a particular sense of fondness for the twisted leaf, and yet, to my eye, it’s the subtle beauty of the sand dollar that seems to come across best on the page.
Since I also have a thing for fabric and embroidery, maybe later I’ll try drawing a close-up view of something woven or stitched.
Pick me! Pick me! I have all kinds of surface interest. And my curves – well, let’s just say, I’ve got plenty.
