Bowl meditation!

The “Papier-Mache for Grown-Ups” workshop this weekend was a hit! Due to popular demand, we’ll probably hold another one soon. Watch this space for details. (Better yet, sign up for our newsletter and get the news right in your inbox. The sign-up link is at the top right-hand corner of the site.)

The group discovered that this version of papier-mache, in which we used the paste to adhere decorative paper to a paperboard bowl template, becomes a meditative process of cutting and gluing.

The photo above shows a bowl I made during the workshop. Here’s the bottom view:

The green surface is composed of multiple overlapping paper circles (made with a circle punch and scrapbooking paper), with a few contrasting circles added around the bowl edges for fun.

Some of our workshop participants tried out the jingle bell bowl shape.

If you’d like to try this process at home, you can use this template for the round bowl (Nicki made ours from cereal boxes):

Or if you prefer the jingle bell shape, check out this jingle bowl bowl tutorial.

See our free downloads page for a printable version of the recipe we used to create rice paste, an adhesive that we used in this workshop as an alternative to the traditional wheat-based papier-mache mixture. It’s quick-drying and lump-free.
